Does This School Shooting PSA Go Too Far?

A new ad by the nonprofit Sandy Hook Promise is generating controversy for its depiction of children during a school shooting. Dubbed “Back-To-School Essentials,” the ad begins like many back-to-school ads, with kids talking about the new stuff their parents got them for the new school year.

Then it takes a dark turn, showing one boy running from a shooting, a girl who appears to have been shot being treated for her wounds, and other children breaking windows to escape.

The final scene is of a girl hiding in a bathroom, thankful for her new phone so she can text her mom goodbye as someone walks toward her. The nonprofit was started by the parents of the Newtown, Connecticut mass shooting.

Does this ad go too far? Usually psa's serve a purpose, a call to action or a warning. This video does neither but instead, instills fear that our children will be victims of a school shooting.
