In the otherwise forgettable Warren Beatty movie Dick Tracy, Al Pacino utters this line when his crew fails to get the job done, “I’m looking for generals and what do I got? Foot soldiers.” That line seems particularly appropriate after watching our New York Senate delegation yesterday, when Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand spoke separately about how great the COVID relief package is going to be for New York. Normally, it isn’t too hard to avoid trouble while telling constituents that you are bringing home the bacon, but somehow these two found a way to make problems for themselves. For his part, Schumer made a rather large pronouncement about the Feds taking over vaccine distribution which his staff later had to explain was NOT, in fact, accurate, AT ALL. As for Sen. Gillibrand, she couldn’t have been less interested in giving even the most tepid answer to an otherwise basic question about Governor Cuomo’s growing harassment scandals. Listen for yourself here and see if you don’t start echoing Al Pacino’s great line, “I’m looking for generals…”
