Press Release from the NYS Thruway Authority:

The New York State Thruway Authority today announced rock remediation work along the Thruway between exit 21 (Catskill – Rte. 23) and exit 21B (Coxsackie – Rte. 9W) will cause temporary traffic stoppages for both northbound and southbound traffic beginning Wednesday, May 3 at approximately 11 a.m.

One scheduled stoppage will occur each day Monday through Thursday at approximately 11 a.m. New York State Police will perform a rolling stop and hold northbound and southbound traffic for up to 15-20 minutes to allow construction work near the roadway to be safely performed.

Northbound traffic will be held north of exit 21 (Catskill – Rte. 23) and traffic will be able to get off the Thruway at exit 21 and travel north on Route 9W to avoid delays. Southbound traffic will be held south of exit 21B and will be able to exit onto Route 9W as well.

Construction on this project began the first week of March and is anticipated to be completed the end of October. Stoppages are expected to be completed by mid-July.

The project is part of a safety and stabilization improvement project to eliminate median rock slopes that are considered locations of high risk where rocks and vegetation could fall and reach high-speed Thruway travel lanes. Once completed, the project will increase the safety on the one mile stretch of the Thruway and eliminate the potential for falling rock and debris from reaching the road.

Variable Message Signs (VMS) and Highway Advisory Radio on 1610 AM will advise motorists of impending stoppages.
