Arizona Memorial

The remains of a sailor from Albany who died at Pearl Harbor have been indentified.

The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency has confirmed that the remains of Ensign Charles Stern Jr. of Albany have been accounted for. Stern was 26 years old, and was assigned to the battleship USS Oklahoma which came under attack from Japanese war planes on December 7, 1941. The Oklahoma was hit by multiple torpedoes and capsized, with more than 400 crew members killed.

Stern's remains were among those disinterred in 2015 as part of an attempt to identify those who died on board the ship.

Stern's family tells the Times Union his remains will be buried at Loudonville's Beth Emeth Cemetery this summer.
