The top 5 things to buy in October

Now that summer is officially over and the back-to-school routine is under control (I hope!), it's time to start thinking about fall and the upcoming holidays. According to RetailMeNot, October is your best month to find deals on Patio Furniture, Small Appliances, Denim, Camping Gear and Halloween Costumes and Candy.

"This month is prime time for shoppers to stock up on some autumn items and potentially get ahead of some holiday planning,” says Sara Skirboll, Shopping and trends expert for RetailMeNot. “Shoppers can use this month to update their fall wardrobe, get decked out in their favorite costumes, as well as get their homes and kitchens holiday guest-ready."

Here is Sara's breakdown on some of the best buys of the month.

Stack the Deck

Did the summer fly by without you purchasing outdoor decor? Shoppers who waited are in luck, as October is a great time to shop for items like patio furniture and decor. With the outdoor season wrapping up, shoppers can find the best prices now before it all clears out before the holidays. For most climates, October is still a great time for some backyard soirees and outdoor entertaining. Shoppers can head to Wayfair and shop their outdoor clearance for up to 70% off.

Deals on Denim

Straight-leg, low-rise, skinny or boyfriend: Whatever denim pleasure shoppers prefer, October is a great time to stock up on one of fall’s biggest staples. This autumn essential has already been flying off the shelves for back-to-school shoppers, but the sales are just getting started. As the cool weather approaches, retailers are starting to discount them and to make room for all of the fall and winter fashions to come before the holidays. Looking to revamp your denim wardrobe? Head to Old Navy where shoppers can score up to 60% off all jeans.

The Great Outdoors

The hot summer days are in the rearview and the cooler climates are coming in. As the seasons change, October brings deals on all kinds of outdoor gear from camping, to fishing and hiking. Outdoor enthusiasts still have some time to enjoy the fresh air before the temperatures drop for winter. Check out retailers like Backcountry for 20% off select camp and climbing gear, Dick’s Sporting Goods for up to 40% off select hunting gear, and Columbia for up to 50% off select gear.

Spooky Savings

When October comes to mind, so does the sugar-fueled madness of Halloween. Between candy for trick-or-treaters and costumes for the family – including those for four-legged friends – the costs can really add up. Shoppers will see the deepest discounts on costumes and candy in the week leading up to Halloween as retailers want all their inventory gone before the holiday passes — after all, what good is orange-and-black candy at Christmas? However, shoppers might not have the best selection that week. For early shoppers looking to snag the winning costumes and candy, look to Spirit Halloween for 25% off one item.

Host with the Most

Holiday gatherings are right around the corner, which makes October a great time to get your home ready for guests. Sales on big appliances started in September, but now is the time to stock up on smaller appliances to ensure your everyone can be a host with the most. Retailers are slashing prices now to make room for inventory on Black Friday and beyond. Shoppers prepping for a large family meal should make sure the kitchen is ready for action and take advantage of sales on items like Keurig coffee makers and other small kitchen appliances as well. For example, shoppers gearing up to host this holiday season can buy this KitchenAid for 60% off at JCPenney.
