The theft of more than 31,000 pounds of food valued at over $50,000 is reported from the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York. Colonie police say Chavez Gibbs of Troy used his former employer’s account, Albany Damien Center, to obtain food on 42 occasions between March and June.
Gibbs then allegedly sold the food to several other area not-for-profit organizations that had been paying him to provide the service. He kept the money and the Albany Damien Center was billed for the food. Gibbs is charged with grand larceny and was on probation for an earlier conviction for larceny, that involved an identity theft, and there is reason to believe that there may be other not-for-profit victims of this scheme
