Proposed Bill Would Increase Punishment For Long Utility Outages

Utility companies could face even tougher punishments for extended service outages under a bill being discussed by state lawmakers.

The legislation, which hasn't been formally drafted, would increase penalties for companies who don't follow emergency response and restoration plans. Right now, how much they can be fined is capped at a certain total. Those in favor of the bill say penalties should match the amount of damage caused by a long outage.
