New Yorkers have a couple extra days to register their political party.
Governor Andrew Cuomo extended the deadline to Tuesday, allowing first time voters to enroll in a political party or those who are already registered to change their political affiliation. Cuomo signed an executive order Sunday, saying the goal is to help break down more barriers to the ballot box and ensure everyone has a chance to exercise this fundamental right. He says the change is necessary to ensure Boards of Election have enough time to process voter-requested changes since many boards are short staffed amid the pandemic.
