On Thursday, police were called to the 400 block of Elk Street to recover a gun that was discovered by a 4 year old boy near a sidewalk.

Police said the boy saw that the handgun had been placed underneath a parked car. When the car left the parking spot, the toddler picked up the handgun and pulled the trigger, firing a single shot. Fortunately no one was hurt.

Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan says that no one, especially a 4 year old boy, should ever be exposed to this traumatic situation. Sheehan says illegal guns are a menace to the community, and she implores anyone who knows how and why the gun was left on a city street to contact Albany Police.
