State lawmakers have passed bills that would establish safer staffing levels at both nursing homes and hospitals in New York.

One measure calls for the state Health Commissioner to mandate the minimum number of people on duty at nursing homes and fine facilities who don't meet that standard. As for hospitals, staffing committees would be created to help ensure patients receive the highest quality of care. Both bills were sent to Governor Cuomo's desk, but there's no word yet if he'll sign them.
