The long abandoned First Prize Center may finally be getting torn down. The state DEC said after delays from Covid, the agency is ready to move forward with its remedial investigation into the property, meaning removing asbestos from the decaying buildings and finally tearing them down. Afterward, a contamination study needs to take place to assess the state of chemicals and metal in the soil and groundwater. The building sits on Exchange Street on the border of Albany and Colonie and was a meat packing plant from the 1920's to the 1980's.
