With New York Governor Andrew Cuomo resigning over a sex harassment scandal, there's a renewed effort to change the name of the bridge memorializing Mario M. Cuomo, another three-term governor, back to the Tappan Zee.
Dumping the original moniker to rename the bridge for his dad has been controversial from the start. Andrew Cuomo pushed for it when the bridge connecting Rockland and Westchester Counties was replaced in 2017. A bill to restore the name failed a year later. But now, GOP Assemblyman Mike Lawler is promoting his bill to go back to the Tappan Zee, hoping enough lawmakers will view the Cuomo name as tainted.
