National Grid is urging customers to be aware of a scam that could end up costing them money.

The utility company says someone is calling customers or sending them an email claiming to be from National Grid saying that they have a past due balance. The scammer then says service will be shut off if the customer doesn't purchase a prepaid debit card and provide them with both their National Grid account number and Social Security number. National Grid says it will never demand payment through prepaid debit cards and that anyone who is contacted by a scammer should call police.
