The Schenectady Police Department is mourning the death of a veteran officer who also served our country overseas.
On Monday Chief Eric Clifford announced the passing of 37-year-old Patrolman Cory Shields who joined the department in 2011. No information on how Shields died was made public and in a statement, Clifford said his loss will affect all his colleagues. During his career as a police officer, Shields received several awards including the Departmental Citation for Bravery after he saved a man from a burning building in 2012. Shields also served as a member of the New York National Guard and flew in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom.
