Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has issued a statement on the framework of an agreement to change the country's gun laws.

The New York Democrat says if approved, the bipartisan legislation would limit the ability of people to quickly obtain assault rifles by establishing an enhanced background check process for gun purchasers under age 21, establish federal penalties for gun traffickers and fund services to address the country's mental health crisis. Schumer says once an agreement is finalized, he'll bring the bill to the Senate floor for a vote. These latest efforts to curb gun violence come after mass shootings in Buffalo and Uvalde, Texas that left dozens of people dead.
