The city of Schenectady is set to welcome a new professional basketball team, the New York Phoenix, in 2025. The Basketball League (TBL) confirmed the addition of the Phoenix, which will play its home games at Armory Studios NY on Washington Avenue in downtown Schenectady. The team will join the Albany Patroons as the newest regional representative of the TBL.
The Phoenix will have a natural rivalry with the Albany Patroons, who play just a county away. The two teams are expected to face each other at least twice a season. The addition of the Phoenix to the TBL is part of the league's expansion strategy, which currently includes about 40 franchises around the country.
The team owner, who has not yet been revealed, will be announced at a press conference at the Armory on Tuesday. The Armory, built in 1936, has hosted a variety of sporting events, including SUNY Schenectady basketball games and boxing matches. The Phoenix will add to the growing sports landscape in the area, joining the Patroons, the Adirondack Thunder (ECHL hockey), and the Tri-City ValleyCats (Pioneer League baseball).
The 2025 season of the TBL is set to start in February. More details about the Phoenix will be revealed at the news conference today.
