Brittany Hawkins, a 34-year-old woman from Albany, New York, has been indicted on a second-degree murder charge for allegedly killing her neighbor, Daquan Phillips. The incident occurred on Halloween when Hawkins is accused of intentionally driving her vehicle onto the sidewalk and striking Phillips before crashing into a building at the Skyline Garden Apartments. The two had reportedly been involved in a verbal altercation prior to the incident.
According to the Times Union, Hawkins pleaded not guilty in Albany County Court on Monday. The indictment was handed up on November 20, following Phillips' death. Initially, Hawkins was charged with second-degree attempted murder, but the charge was upgraded after Phillips succumbed to his injuries.
CBS6 Albany reports that Hawkins continues to be held without bail and is due back in court on December 20. If convicted, she could face a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison.
