United Airlines has announced that it will discontinue direct flights from Albany International Airport to Newark Liberty International Airport, effective from March 29, 2025. The airline confirmed that passengers wishing to travel to Newark will have to connect through a different airport. However, United will continue to offer service from Albany to Chicago and Washington Dulles Airport.
The decision to end these direct flights is part of United's ongoing efforts to optimize its offerings at Newark, a notoriously congested and slot-restricted airport. According to Simple Flying, United is making several changes to its route network, including cuts and schedule additions at its hubs in the Northeastern United States.
Despite the cut in direct flights to Newark, Albany will still retain United service through existing routes from Chicago O'Hare and Washington Dulles hubs, as reported by Aviation A2Z.
The changes are part of a broader shift in United's operations, with the airline also introducing the Boeing 777-300ER on key European and Middle Eastern routes from Newark Liberty International Airport in spring 2024.
