State officials in New York are encouraging residents to start 2025 with outdoor activities by participating in the 14th Annual First Day Hikes program. On New Year's Day (January 1), nearly 100 locations across the state, including Saratoga Spa State Park, Peebles Island State Park, and Moreau Lake State Park, will host hikes. To make the event more accessible, Governor Kathy Hochul has waived parking fees at all state parks and historic sites, while admission to state park grounds remains free.

The First Day Hikes program offers a variety of hiking options, ranging from self-guided treks to staff- or volunteer-led hikes. Most hikes are family-friendly and typically range from one to five miles, depending on the location and conditions. The event aims to encourage New Yorkers to enjoy the winter beauty of the state's scenic landscapes and promote physical and mental wellness.

Governor Hochul stated, "There's no better way to kick off the New Year than with family and friends at a First Day Hike to experience and enjoy the winter beauty of New York’s amazing scenic landscapes."

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, the Department of Environmental Conservation, and the Canal Corporation are collaborating to host these events. Participants are encouraged to check specific details and register where required. For more information, visit the New York State Parks website.
