Two significant fires broke out in the Albany area on Wednesday (January 1), leading to tragic outcomes and ongoing investigations. In Sandgate, Vermont, a house fire claimed the lives of two individuals and injured two others. The fire started late Wednesday morning, and several fire departments from New York and Vermont responded to the call around 11:30 a.m. The deceased will undergo autopsies at the Chief Medical Examiner's office in Burlington, Vermont, while the injured were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, according to CBS6 Albany.

Meanwhile, in Schenectady, New York, firefighters battled a large blaze at a maintenance garage for Auto Solutions on Maxon Road Extension. The fire was reported around 7:30 p.m., sending thick smoke into the air. Fire crews from Niskayuna and Schenectady worked to control the two-alarm fire, which was fought both from inside and above. Schenectady police assisted by blocking off portions of Maxon Road Extension to facilitate the firefighting efforts. As of late Wednesday night, the fire had not yet been extinguished, as reported by The Daily Gazette.

Both incidents are under investigation.
