New York Attorney General Letitia James has extended the deadline for Uber and Lyft drivers to claim their share of a $328 million settlement until January 31, 2025. The extension comes after tens of millions of dollars remained unclaimed from the settlement, which was initially set to expire in July 2024. The settlement addresses wage theft allegations against Uber and Lyft, where drivers were underpaid due to unauthorized deductions for sales taxes and Black Car Fund fees between 2014 and 2017.
Attorney General James secured $290 million from Uber and $38 million from Lyft, ensuring drivers receive back pay, a minimum earnings floor, and paid sick leave. Drivers who worked for Uber between November 10, 2014, and May 22, 2017, or for Lyft between October 11, 2015, and July 31, 2017, may be eligible for compensation.
As of December 18, over 88,000 claims have been filed, but approximately $58 million remains unclaimed. Drivers can file claims through the official settlement portals or contact Rust Consulting, the settlement administrator, for assistance. The New York Taxi Workers Alliance is also available to provide information and support to drivers.
Attorney General James emphasized the importance of ensuring drivers receive the compensation they deserve, stating, "Rideshare drivers help keep New York moving and deserve full and fair compensation for their hard work." Drivers are urged to check their eligibility and submit claims before the deadline to secure their funds.
