New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is taking steps to ensure the state is prepared for potential wildfires following recent fires in Los Angeles. She has sent a letter to the New York State Division of Homeland Security requesting information on the state's readiness to combat wildfires. The senator highlighted the unseasonably dry conditions and strong winds in November that fueled wildfires in areas like New York City and the Hudson Valley.
Gillibrand is also working on legislation to increase resources for fire departments. This includes measures to provide more funding for training and equipment to fight wildfires. At a recent press conference, Gillibrand emphasized the need for a comprehensive disaster relief package to address the increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather events. She called on Congress to provide additional federal funding for disaster relief, including for the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Disaster Relief Fund.
Gillibrand stated, "Over the last month, we have seen an unprecedented number of brush fires across the city." She urged Congress to pass a comprehensive disaster relief package to replenish funding for key federal disaster response programs.
Additionally, Gillibrand is advocating for increased funding for the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFGP) to ensure fire departments have the necessary equipment and staffing. She noted that many fire departments in New York are using outdated gear and facing staffing shortages. The senator is pushing for additional federal funding to address these issues and support firefighters as they protect their communities.
