The New York State Thruway Authority has issued a warning to motorists about a scam involving fake text messages. These messages, appearing to be from E-ZPass NY or Tolls By Mail NY, claim that recipients have an overdue balance and direct them to a website to input personal information. The Thruway Authority emphasizes that E-ZPass and Tolls By Mail will never request sensitive information such as credit card numbers, social security numbers, or usernames via text or email.
According to Lohud.com, over $11 million was lost in 2023 due to more than 9,000 reported phishing scams in regions including Rochester, Albany, Buffalo, and Syracuse. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) advises that if you receive such a message, do not provide any personal information. Instead, contact the E-ZPass NY Customer Service Center at 1-800-333-8655 or the Tolls By Mail Customer Service Center at 1-844-826-8400.
The Thruway Authority encourages the public to spread awareness about this scam to prevent others from falling victim. If you suspect you have been targeted, report the incident to law enforcement and file a complaint with the FCC and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
