A large-scale nuclear incident training exercise is taking place this week in upstate New York. The exercise, which began on Sunday (January 26), involves multiple federal and state agencies, including the FBI, Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, and the National Nuclear Security Administration. The training is set to continue through Friday (January 31) in the areas of Schenectady, Albany, and Saratoga, including the Stratton Air National Guard Base and Albany Airport.
According to a written statement from the FBI, the public should not be alarmed by the presence of military personnel, vehicles, aircraft, and individuals in protective equipment. These exercises are designed to enhance operational readiness in the event of a nuclear incident in the United States or overseas.
The FBI emphasized that such training exercises have been conducted twice a year across the nation since 2012. The goal is to provide participating entities with the opportunity to practice and improve their response capabilities under realistic conditions.
While the public may notice the training activities, continuous observation by the public or media is not permitted. The FBI Albany Office issued an alert about the exercise on January 24, which was shared on their Facebook page.
