Troy police have provided more information about a high-speed chase that occurred over the weekend, involving a stolen vehicle and resulting in a crash. The incident began on Saturday (January 25) when police spotted 33-year-old Anthony Bonaparte driving a stolen car. Bonaparte refused to stop, leading officers on a chase from Lansingburgh through Troy and into Waterford.
The pursuit ended when Bonaparte crashed into a road sign on Division Street in Waterford. As Officer Anthony Gullo approached the vehicle, he slipped, causing his gun to accidentally discharge. The bullet hit the car's windshield, but no one was injured by the gunfire. However, Bonaparte sustained a lip injury, though it is unclear how it occurred.
According to the Times Union, Bonaparte was treated at a hospital before being arraigned in Troy City Court. He faces multiple charges, including fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, third-degree unlawfully fleeing police in a motor vehicle, and reckless driving. He pleaded not guilty and is being held in Rensselaer County Jail without bail.
CBS6 Albany reported that Officer Gullo, who has been with the Troy Police Department for two years, was also taken to the hospital for evaluation and has since been discharged. The incident caused temporary traffic delays in the area.
The investigation is ongoing, and police are still determining the cause of Bonaparte's injury.
