The City of Troy, New York, is grappling with a road salt shortage as winter conditions persist. Mayor Carmella Mantello declared an emergency on Thursday (February 6) due to the inability of American Rock Salt to meet the high demand for salt during the winter months. This shortage has led to the cancellation of salt deliveries for Troy, also known as the Collar City.
Mayor Mantello's emergency declaration allows the city to seek alternative suppliers to ensure roads remain safe for drivers. "It's imperative that roads be safe for drivers to travel on," Mantello emphasized in her statement.
The shortage is not unique to Troy, as several communities across New York State are experiencing similar issues. The city is actively working to secure additional salt supplies to address the situation. Meanwhile, residents are urged to exercise caution while driving in icy conditions.
As the city navigates this challenge, officials are exploring long-term solutions to prevent future shortages and ensure the safety of Troy's roads during winter months.
