A 14-year-old student from Washington Irving School in Schenectady was arrested for allegedly threatening another student via Snapchat. According to the police, the teen threatened to bring a gun to school and fatally shoot a peer following a dispute earlier in the week. The arrest was made after the Schenectady School District notified police of the threat on Saturday (February 22) at 11:30 p.m.
WNYT reports that the suspect has been charged with second-degree aggravated harassment, a misdemeanor. Youth Aid Bureau detectives conducted interviews with the suspect and his family before filing charges. Despite the serious nature of the threat, no gun was found during the investigation, and authorities have stated that there is no ongoing threat to the school community.
Police continue to collaborate with school administrators to ensure student safety. The Schenectady City School District emphasized the importance of reporting suspicious activities, urging students to inform adults if they see or hear anything concerning. Due to the suspect's age, no further identifying information has been released.
