Schenectady residents have the opportunity to share their thoughts on updates to the city's comprehensive plan at a meeting tonight (February 25) from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Mont Pleasant Library. This plan, last revised in 2008, will guide decisions on housing, economic development, infrastructure, and transportation. The city received $85,000 in state funding to aid in this update.
The meeting is part of a series of public forums aimed at gathering community input. According to the Daily Gazette, Schenectady Director of Development Alexandria Carver emphasized the importance of community engagement, stating, "Keeping residents engaged ensures their voices continue to shape the vision for the future."
The updated plan, called "Electric City Recharged," will address infrastructure, land use, housing, transportation, recreation, economic development, and natural resources. An online community survey is also available for residents to provide feedback on various aspects of city life, including downtown visits and affordable housing.
The comprehensive plan team includes representatives from community organizations, such as Tom Carey of the Upper Union Neighborhood Association and Schenectady City School District Superintendent Carlos Cotto. The plan committee will review community feedback in the spring and develop an initial report, with a draft comprehensive plan expected in the fall.
