Governor Kathy Hochul announced a significant investment of $19.5 million to bolster public safety in Albany during a roundtable event on Tuesday (February 25). The funding includes $1 million for the Albany Police Department and $500,000 for the Albany County Sheriff's Office, aimed at enhancing safety measures and reducing crime in New York's capital.
According to Governor Hochul, crime statistics are down 12% statewide, but the perception of safety remains a concern. The investment will support overtime pay for police officers, new intelligence-gathering technology, and efforts to reduce gun violence.
Interim Albany Police Chief Brendan Cox highlighted ongoing challenges with staffing, noting the department is short by 79 officers. The funding will also address these issues by covering overtime costs and supporting recruitment efforts.
The initiative is part of a broader $400 million investment proposal aimed at improving Albany's quality of life. Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of public safety as a foundation for attracting new residents and businesses to the city.
The funding announcement follows a recent special report on Albany's safety challenges and aims to change the narrative that the city is crime-ridden. Hochul stressed the need for collaboration among state, city, and county officials to achieve a stable and secure environment for residents and visitors alike.
