State Assemblyman Robert Smullen has introduced the Alexander John Smullen Traffic Safety Memorial Law in Albany. This bill, named in honor of his late son, aims to establish a memorial sign program for victims of fatal vehicle accidents. The initiative would allow families and friends to place signs at accident sites, serving as a reminder of the importance of road safety.
The bill is a personal endeavor for Smullen, whose 14-year-old son, AJ, died last year after being hit by a vehicle near Bellevue Women's Hospital in Niskayuna. AJ suffered a traumatic brain injury and died after a fierce fight in the pediatric ICU. Smullen hopes the signs will raise awareness about the consequences of reckless, impaired, and distracted driving.
During a press conference in Albany, Smullen expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to propose such legislation. "The Alexander John Smullen Traffic Safety Memorial Law will allow family and friends the opportunity to purchase a sign that memorializes victims of fatal vehicle collisions," he stated.
The bill is expected to face discussions in the New York State Senate, with support from various lawmakers who recognize the importance of road safety awareness.
