Outrage is mounting in New York as families express concern over the conditions in state prisons while corrections officers continue their strike. According to Legal Aid Society Attorney Antony Gemmell, hundreds of inmates are reportedly not receiving adequate food and critical medical care, and many are confined to their cells. Gemmell described the conditions as dehumanizing and degrading, urging an end to the illegal strikes.
In response to the ongoing situation, Governor Kathy Hochul deployed 3,500 members of the National Guard to prisons across the state. However, Gemmell criticized this move as merely a temporary fix, likening it to a band-aid solution that fails to address the root issues within the prison system.
The strike and subsequent conditions have sparked widespread concern among families and advocacy groups, who are calling for immediate action to ensure the safety and well-being of inmates. The situation remains tense as the strike continues and solutions are sought to resolve the crisis.
