A new legal conflict is emerging over the demolition of the Central Warehouse in Albany. Jackson Demolition, a company based in Schenectady, is threatening legal action after losing the bid to demolish the long-standing structure. The company claims, without providing evidence, that the decision to negotiate contracts with two Long Island firms was influenced by campaign donations made to Governor Kathy Hochul. However, the governor's office has stated that such donations do not affect government decisions.
The Albany County alliance board has already voted to begin negotiations for the demolition, which is estimated to cost over $14 million. This amount exceeds the $13 million in funding provided by the state and county. The Advance Albany County Alliance took control of the property in January for $50,000. According to BizJournals, the demolition is expected to proceed without an implosion and could be completed by early 2026.
Governor Hochul has stated that the redevelopment of the site will create over 700 new jobs. Despite the legal challenges, the project is moving forward, with the aim of revitalizing the area and boosting the local economy.
