The city of Troy is offering free lead pipe replacements to its residents in an effort to improve water quality and safety. Mayor Carmella Montello announced that the city aims to replace all lead pipes before the end of her first term. This initiative comes after drinking water quality monitoring revealed elevated lead levels in some homes, despite the city's water source being free of lead.

Homeowners with properties built before 1975 are encouraged to contact the city's water department for a free inspection. The typical cost of replacing lead pipes, which can reach up to $10,000, will be covered by the city. According to CBS6 Albany, Troy City Council Pro-Tem Tom Casey emphasized the importance of this opportunity, stating, "The big thing is that it's free. You know, it's a very rare opportunity."

The city plans to begin the replacement process by summer 2025, with multiple contractors ready to assist. Residents are advised to run their water to flush out lead, use cold water for cooking, and replace plumbing fixtures if they contain lead.

For more information or to schedule an inspection, residents can contact the Troy Department of Public Utilities at (518) 237-0343 or visit the city's official website. Additionally, the city is offering lead reduction Brita water pitchers to those with verified lead service lines.
