U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer is calling for the Leo W. O'Brien Federal Building in Albany to remain open after it was briefly listed for sale by the General Services Administration (GSA). The building, which houses essential federal services, was marked for disposal but then quickly removed from the list, causing confusion and concern among residents and federal workers.

The O'Brien Building has been a vital hub for over 50 years, providing services such as Social Security, military processing, and IRS assistance. Schumer emphasized the importance of these services to the Capital Region, stating that closing the building would disrupt essential functions for thousands of residents. He criticized the potential sale as "penny wise and pound foolish," arguing it would ultimately cost taxpayers more if the government had to lease space from private landlords.

According to Schumer's press release, the GSA's abrupt removal of the list has left many questions unanswered. He is seeking clarity on why the building was listed and then removed and is demanding assurances that services will continue uninterrupted.

Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan supported Schumer's stance, highlighting the building's importance in one of the region's most underserved areas. The GSA stated that selling "non-core" properties could save over $430 million in annual operating costs, but Schumer insists that the community deserves transparency and certainty regarding the building's future.
