The Ballston Spa Central School District is considering the installation of cameras in school zones to enhance student safety. The initiative aims to catch and deter speeding drivers, especially near Malta Avenue Elementary School, where speeding has been a concern for residents. According to the village's mayor, there have been numerous complaints about speeding in these areas.

In both 2022 and 2023, incidents occurred where students were struck by vehicles while crossing near Ballston Spa High School, highlighting the need for increased safety measures. The proposed cameras would serve as a deterrent and a means to enforce speed limits more effectively.

The district's move to explore this option reflects a growing trend among schools to utilize technology for student safety. The cameras would not only help in monitoring speed but also provide valuable data to address traffic safety concerns in school zones.

The proposal is still in the early stages, and the district is expected to conduct further assessments before making a final decision. If implemented, the cameras could significantly reduce speeding and enhance the safety of students and pedestrians in the area.
