In Albany, a jury has convicted Ulias Kornegay of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon for the fatal shooting of K-Won Lillard. The verdict was reached after less than an hour of deliberation following a two-and-a-half-day trial. The incident occurred on May 24, 2024, outside Ciro's Place, a nightclub on Broadway.
Kornegay, 35, claimed he acted in self-defense, fearing for his life during the confrontation with Lillard, 36. However, the prosecution argued that Kornegay approached Lillard with the intent to kill. Surveillance footage played a crucial role in the trial, showing Kornegay retrieving a gun from his car and shooting Lillard multiple times, including fatal shots to the face and head.
During the trial, Kornegay testified that he believed Lillard was armed and threatening, but no weapon was found at the scene. Assistant District Attorney Ryan Carty highlighted inconsistencies in Kornegay's testimony, particularly regarding the acquisition and disposal of the firearm used in the shooting.
Following the incident, Kornegay fled to Florida but was apprehended upon his return to Albany in June 2024. He is scheduled to be sentenced on May 15 and faces 40 years to life in prison.
