Albany County is set to launch a new esports program aimed at engaging youth and teaching them about the growing industry. The Albany County Parks and Recreation Department announced the 12-week STEM Esports Program, which will begin on April 2. According to NEWS10 ABC, the program will provide students with access to esports equipment and teach them how to create and manage their own esports organizations. Participants will also learn skills related to broadcasting, marketing, and social media management.
Albany County Executive Dan McCoy emphasized the program's role in youth engagement, stating, "Esports is more than just gaming; it’s an entry point into technology careers, a driver of teamwork and leadership skills, and a rapidly growing industry with real opportunities." The initiative is supported by MVP Health Care and Claim to Fame Entertainment L.L.C., with a $15,000 investment from the Innovative Partnership. Albany County's website highlights that the program aims to level the playing field for students from diverse backgrounds by providing them with valuable STEM skills.
The program will also focus on promoting positive online communities and responsible gaming habits. Michael Della Villa, MVP Health Care's Chief Digital & Information Officer, noted the importance of this initiative in fostering a community of future leaders and innovators.
