A fire broke out at the Latham Village Apartments in Colonie, New York, on Monday (March 24), causing significant damage but fortunately resulting in no injuries. The fire started in building 39 of the complex, located on Latham Village Lane near Troy-Schenectady Road, around 2 p.m. Firefighters arrived within two minutes to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the building's first and second floors, extending to the roof.
Initial reports suggested that people might be trapped inside, but all residents managed to evacuate safely. The fire affected two apartments heavily, while the remaining 10 units in the 12-apartment building suffered smoke and water damage. The blaze presented challenges for the firefighters, including a failed hydrant near the building, which forced crews to use an alternative water source from a hydrant on Troy-Schenectady Road.
According to Colonie Fire Coordinator Michael Romano, it took about an hour to get the fire under control, with assistance from multiple mutual aid agencies. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, but it is not considered suspicious.
The property management company and the Red Cross are providing assistance to the displaced residents. The Latham Fire Department expressed gratitude to all agencies involved in managing the incident and ensuring the safety of the residents.
