Dorcey Applyrs, a Democratic candidate for mayor of Albany, has taken a significant step in her campaign by submitting over 2,600 signatures on her nominating petitions. This number is nearly three times the required amount, making her the first candidate to file for the Democratic primary ballot. Applyrs expressed gratitude to the volunteers who helped gather signatures by going door-to-door to share her message with voters.

Applyrs, who currently serves as Albany's Chief City Auditor, announced her candidacy in November 2023. She aims to become the city's first non-white mayor and has emphasized her commitment to economic inclusion and public safety. Applyrs, a former common councilor, holds a doctorate in public health from the University at Albany. She has been actively involved in addressing air quality issues in the South End and plans to prioritize public safety as a public health crisis if elected.

The current mayor, Kathy Sheehan, appointed Applyrs as auditor in 2020 and is not seeking another term. Other candidates in the race include Common Council President Corey Ellis and Albany County Legislator Carolyn McLaughlin. The Democratic primary is scheduled for June 2025, and the general election will take place in November 2025.
