A rally against hate is taking place today (April 7) in Rotterdam following the vandalism of an LGBTQ+ Pride flag and pole outside the Rotterdam Community Center. The incident, which occurred Thursday night (April 3), was captured on a traffic camera and is being investigated by local police. The vandalism is being treated as an intentional act, and those responsible could face hate crime charges if certain criteria are met.

The rally, organized by local community members, began at 10 a.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church. Reverend Dustin Longmire, pastor of the church, described the damage as a "likely incident of hatred in our local community" and expressed gratitude for the police's support. He plans to address the incidents during church services, emphasizing the need for unity in the face of divisiveness. The flagpole, which had become a symbol of resilience for the community, was installed less than three years ago following a similar incident at the church.

Chris DeTeso, the new Executive Director of the Rotterdam Community Center, highlighted the center's commitment to inclusivity. The center's 2024 Needs Assessment Report revealed deep divisions in the town, with concerns about xenophobia, homophobia, and racism contributing to a sense of unwelcome among some residents.

The rally aims to bring together local leaders, clergy, and residents to stand against hate and promote a message of acceptance and unity. As the investigation continues, the community remains hopeful for justice and healing.
