The Schenectady Police Department is actively investigating a troubling case of animal abuse involving a dog named Lavender. Discovered near Eastern Parkway and McClellan Street on March 29, Lavender was found with severe injuries, including a severed ear and broken teeth. The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society is currently caring for her as she recovers from these injuries.
Authorities have arrested Basean D. Brooks, a 31-year-old Schenectady resident, who is accused of abandoning Lavender in her injured state. He faces charges of overdriving, torturing, or injuring animals, and failing to provide sustenance. However, the investigation is ongoing, as police are still seeking information on who is responsible for Lavender's injuries.
Animal advocacy groups, including Partners in Animal Welfare and Animal Nation, along with a private donor, have offered a $6,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. The New York State Humane Association has added an additional $1,000, bringing the total reward to $7,000.
The community is urged to assist by providing any information that could help solve this case. Tips can be reported to the Schenectady Police Department’s Detective Division at (518) 382-5245 or the tips line at (518) 788-6566.
