Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced plans to call a vote next week on tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump during a visit to Albany on Monday (April 21). Schumer believes there may be enough Republican support to pass a resolution in the Senate to reverse the 10-percent tariffs on imported goods. The resolution would also prevent President Trump from using the same declaration to impose new tariffs.

Schumer emphasized the negative impact of the tariffs on Upstate New York, stating that they are causing significant price increases and threatening local jobs. According to Schumer's press release, the tariffs could increase costs for families in the Capital Region by nearly $5,000 annually and risk over 14,000 jobs in the area.

Local business owners, like those from Yono's Restaurant in Albany, expressed concerns about the tariffs' impact on their operations, as they rely on imported ingredients and supplies. The tariffs have also affected other industries, such as the pool manufacturing company Latham Pool, which sources a significant portion of its materials from overseas.

Despite President Trump's assertion that the tariffs are necessary to address trade imbalances and protect American manufacturing, Schumer and other critics argue that they are causing more harm than good. Schumer stated, "This is just a horrible thing, it was chaotic, it’s unthought out," according to Spectrum Local News.

The Senate recently passed a bipartisan resolution to end Trump's tariffs on Canada, with Schumer urging the House to follow suit. Schumer remains committed to reversing the tariffs and protecting New York families and businesses from further economic strain.
