Schenectady police have arrested 19-year-old Cecil Toland in connection with the fatal shooting of Wilfredo Vasquez Jr. on Van Vranken Avenue last Wednesday (April 23). Toland, a resident of Schenectady, faces charges of second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
According to police, the incident occurred around 3:24 p.m. when officers responded to reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found 36-year-old Vasquez with a gunshot wound to his torso. He was transported to Ellis Hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Authorities believe the shooting resulted from an altercation between Toland and Vasquez, though the specifics of the dispute remain undisclosed.
The Schenectady Police Department is continuing its investigation and has urged anyone with information to contact their detectives. As reported by NEWS10 ABC, the department is treating the case as a homicide.
In a related incident, police are also investigating another shooting that occurred less than 24 hours later on Hamburg Street, where another individual was found dead from an apparent gunshot wound. The identity of this victim has not been released, and the case is also being investigated as a homicide, according to Times Union.
