New details have emerged regarding a fatal shooting in Schenectady, where authorities have determined the incident was a result of a home invasion. Schenectady County District Attorney Robert Carney stated that the shooting occurred last Thursday (April 24) at a residence on Hamburg Street. The deceased, identified as 28-year-old Yadram Singh, allegedly broke into the home armed with a shotgun concealed in a stroller bassinet. The homeowner, 25-year-old Marc Cunningham, shot Singh in what has been ruled as self-defense.
According to Times Union, this was the second time Singh had targeted Cunningham's home. The first incident occurred earlier in April when Singh allegedly broke in while Cunningham was not present. During the recent invasion, Singh reportedly fired a shotgun round inside the house before Cunningham responded with two shots, one of which struck Singh in the chest.
Despite the self-defense ruling, Cunningham faces charges of felony criminal possession of a firearm, as the gun used was reportedly owned illegally. News10 reported that the police investigation confirmed Singh's role as the intruder, supporting Cunningham's claim of self-defense.
The case is being handled by Assistant District Attorney Pete Willis, and the investigation remains ongoing. Cunningham's attorney, Daniel Smalls, emphasized that Cunningham is distraught over the incident and denied any involvement in illicit activities. The shooting has been described as an "unfortunate circumstance" by those involved.
