Jury selection is set to begin today (May 5) in the trial of Ronald Rayher, a Milton resident accused of causing the death of Thomas J. Krider. Krider, known for his Elvis tribute performances and participation in the Star Trek Original Series Set Tour in Ticonderoga, died on April 5, 2024. Prosecutors allege that Rayher tied up Krider and administered chloroform multiple times, leading to his death.
Rayher faces charges of second-degree manslaughter and tampering with physical evidence. According to WNYT, Rayher allegedly moved and hid personal items from the scene of Krider’s death. His attorney, Kevin O'Brien, has stated that the two men had a contract to engage in sexual activity, which he plans to present as evidence in the trial.
The case has drawn attention due to its unusual nature, with Rayher's defense focusing on the consensual aspect of their relationship. O'Brien emphasized the importance of selecting jurors who are open-minded about "unconventional sex" and same-sex relationships. As reported by the Times Union, O'Brien stated, "Everything I was aware of was consensual in nature."
Krider, who was 40 years old at the time of his death, was reported missing by his wife after he failed to return home. Rayher later informed authorities about Krider's death, leading to his arrest. The trial, which will take place in Saratoga County Court in Ballston Spa, is expected to last two to three weeks.
