The reopening of the Knickerbacker Park pool in Lansingburgh, Troy has been postponed to 2026. Originally planned to open this year, the project faced delays due to logistical challenges and environmental assessment requirements. Crews have yet to break ground, but construction is expected to begin soon. The pool has been closed since 2016 due to stability concerns.
The new aquatic center will feature a splash pad, lounge area, and bathrooms. The project will cost over $7.1 million, with nearly $6 million funded by the NY SWIMS program and the rest covered by federal COVID-19 relief funds. Mayor Carmella Mantello expressed her commitment to the project, emphasizing its importance to the community. "The pool is more than a pool," Mantello said. "A lot of kids get lunch at the pool. Sometimes, for some of them, it’s sad to say that it is their only meal of the day."
Troy City Council President Sue Steele criticized the delay, citing the administration's failure to secure an environmental assessment review. However, Mantello's spokesperson, Alex Horton, denied these claims. The city aims to have the facility ready for the summer of 2026, marking a decade since the pool's closure.
The Knickerbacker Park pool project is part of a broader effort to enhance community facilities in Troy, including the newly revived Knick Ice Arena and new playgrounds. Mayor Mantello acknowledged the support from Governor Hochul, Assembly Member John McDonald, and Senator Jake Ashby in securing funding for the project.
