A homeowner in Niskayuna is recovering after suffering burns in a garage fire on Van Antwerp Road on Sunday (May 11). Firefighters from Niskayuna Fire District No. 1 responded to the scene at 8:13 a.m. and found the garage fully engulfed in flames. The fire, which was venting through the roof and doors, posed a threat to nearby structures, including two homes, a shed, and a vehicle parked in the driveway.

According to CBS 6 Albany, firefighters managed to contain the blaze to the garage, but the shed and vehicle sustained damage from radiant heat. The presence of flammable materials such as gasoline, propane, and oxyacetylene inside the garage made extinguishing the fire challenging.

The fire was brought under control in about 45 minutes, although extensive overhaul efforts continued until 12:08 p.m. The injured homeowner, who attempted to put out the fire before firefighters arrived, was taken to Albany Medical Center in stable condition.

As reported by Times Union, the fire is under investigation by Schenectady County Fire Investigators, but it appears to have been accidental. Multiple fire departments and emergency services assisted at the scene or responded to other calls in the district during the incident.
