As Memorial Day approaches, Albany County lawmakers are honoring veterans by displaying recognition banners along Washington Avenue in Albany, New York. The banners pay tribute to 11 veterans, celebrating their sacrifice, bravery, and dedication. Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy, who is also an active National Guardsman, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that the banners serve as a visible tribute to the courage and service of those who have served the nation.

The banners, which feature the names and faces of the honored veterans, symbolize the deep gratitude and respect the community holds for these individuals. Albany County Legislature Chairwoman Joanne Cunningham expressed pride in unveiling the banners, noting that each one tells the story of a hero who answered the call to serve. "These banners are more than fabric and ink," she said. "They are powerful symbols of sacrifice, courage, and unwavering service."

Deputy Chairwoman Wanda Willingham shared the personal significance of the ceremony, as her father was among those recognized. She highlighted the importance of understanding the sacrifices made by veterans, which allow for the freedoms and celebrations enjoyed today.

The initiative is set to continue, with another round of banners planned for Veterans Day in November. Community members are encouraged to nominate veterans for future recognition by contacting the Albany County Legislature.
