Residents across the Capital Region are heading to the polls today (May 20) to vote on school district budget proposals. The recently approved state budget increased school aid by $1.7 billion, totaling over $37.5 billion. However, many districts had to finalize their spending plans before knowing the final state aid numbers due to the budget's late approval.

Voters will decide on school budgets, board of education members, and other ballot measures, such as library budgets and trustees. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at various locations, depending on the district. For example, voting takes place at Watervliet Elementary School and the Watervliet Elks Lodge from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. according to the Watervliet City School District.

If a district's proposed budget exceeds the tax cap, it requires approval from 60% of voters. For instance, the Brunswick Central School District's budget proposal, which exceeds the tax cap, must be approved by a supermajority. The Times Union reports that the tax levy determines the level of voter support needed to pass the budget.

Voters must be at least 18 years old, U.S. citizens, and residents of the school district for at least 30 days before the election. For more information on polling hours and locations, residents are encouraged to contact their local district.
