As Memorial Day weekend approaches, law enforcement across New York State is intensifying efforts to prevent drunk driving. The Governor's Traffic Safety Committee has initiated the STOP-DWI patrols, which will run from Friday (May 23) through Monday (May 26). During this period, New York State Police and local agencies will increase patrols, set up DWI checkpoints, and utilize unmarked CITE vehicles to identify and apprehend impaired drivers.

Last year, over 10,000 tickets were issued during the same weekend, and more than 200 drivers were arrested for DWI. This year, authorities aim to reduce these numbers by being more visible and strict. Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized the importance of safety as the summer season begins, urging drivers to make responsible choices, such as using the "Have a Plan" app to arrange safe transportation.

The effort is part of a broader campaign funded by the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee, which supports several annual enforcement initiatives targeting impaired driving. New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James has reiterated the dangers of driving under the influence, stating that the campaign aims to prevent tragedies and ensure the safety of all road users.

New York State Association of Chiefs of Police President Shawn Heubusch and Chautauqua County Sheriff James Quattrone also highlighted the importance of planning for a safe ride home. They stressed that driving impaired could result in severe penalties, including license suspension, fines, and jail time.

As residents head out for the holiday, law enforcement encourages everyone to buckle up, drive sober, and report any suspicious or dangerous activity by dialing 911.
